Many years ago I learned, the hard way, that networks, particularly network research, are very different from communications. Communications systems are mostly point to point and over well defined channels. It is possible to characterize a communication system with an accurate model. In 1948, Clude Shannon added precise mathematical structures and insights to the problem. For decades, the communication researches enjoyed this clarity and have been exceeding productive in making accurate predictions of fundamental limits and coming very close to them in practical systems. This success story does not translate to network research
